Argh! I logged into my Yahoo mail only to find it's all been deleted because I hadn't logged in in four months. I didn't know they did that! I thought you had a year. Or maybe 6 months. I have the address back now, but all my mail from when I was in Australia is gone :-( Shite.

Email them in the hope they can reactivate it?
Siljasilja on January 21st, 2006 03:47 pm (UTC)
agreed- that happened to me once with another webmail provider (hushmail), and they were able to get it back for me, in about a week.

I can't find a way to contact them!

I doubt it. They specifically say the information will be deleted. They don't make it obvious beforehand though. After some digging, I found

"Dormant accounts are de-activated at the end of four months....Once an account has been de-activated, we cannot retrieve any of the information that was formerly stored in it."

They don't even make it absolutely clear that you have to log into mail. I've been using my account for yahoo groups very regularly.

Argh; very annoying! I love to keep messages from days of old; got all my email back to 1991 and text messages since about 2000. Am so much better at telling others what a good idea backups are than actually doing them myself though; would be so very annoyed if I lost a chunk of the past like that!

[you never downloaded that mail to another computer, perhaps? (although don't know if yahoo lets you fetch mail with POP or IMAP)]

No, I never backed it up. My sister says she can send me any I sent her, but that's the best I can do. I was useless at keeping a diary - my last entry was the day before we went skydiving! - so my best record of the year is in emails. Or rather, was.

Not that it's any help to you, but I can make the same offer your sister has. That'll probably just cover about three messages, if that, given how good I tend to be at keeping in touch. Other than that, I summarise my echo of you: bugger!

Better than nothing! I'm particularly looking for Oz stuff, which would be 1999/2000.

yegods, thanks for telling me, I thought if you used your yahoo login, e.g. for flickr or yahoo groups, it kept your mail alive.

*folding arms and humphing loudly* on your behalf

Yeah, I'm hoping this will serve as a warning to other people. They really don't make it obvious.

*still cross*
