Airport Screening/Screaming
Actually, I have to stop myself from laughing during the screening process. I am covered in jewellery, much of which doesn't come off, including bells on 1 ankle that need pliers to remove them! An operation to put my left arm back together sometimes sets the bleepers off, though there shouldn't be any hardware in there. After the wand process they ask me to remove my shoes, then look! "Er, umm, we don't need to check your shoes, er do we?" I'm barefooted!!! At the " could you take all your jewellery off" question I grin manically & say "I'm paralysed on my left side ~ could you take it all off AND put it all back on again" at that point they hold down screams of frustration & let me through! Bad Killi :D

Re: Airport Screening/Screaming
Have you had your arm checked in case they left a scalpel in there?!?!

Re: Airport Screening/Screaming
It doesn't set the wand off every time ~ I had nails along my bones & when they removed the nails they had to cut away chunks of bone which had grown over the ends. Or maybe they removed lumps of bone & left the nails....................

Eep! What happened you?

Re: Airport Screening/Screaming
What happened to me? I was in the side-car of a motorbike & was driven under an oncoming milk tanker ~ end of my music career & hopes to become a Primary School teacher specializing in maths & music. I have a list of injuries & scars & photos of the remains of the side-car ~ some bits were never found! The bike was left in perfect condition............... That's why I'm partially hemiplegic. If you want to know more ~ ask; same for anybody else

When was that?

Re: Airport Screening/Screaming
31st Dec 1984 at about 3pm. I spent my 21st birthday in hospital. So quite a while ago really ~1/2 a lifetime ago, but losing my music still hurts & I miss not having 2 usable arms & hands with silly little things ~ I rarely dance with a partner now because I can't hold their hand & I was a dancer as well as a singer & musician............ It makes me feel only 1/2 a real person ~ I am disabled & a cripple, but I often make a joke of it because people prefer that to the reality :)

I see what you mean - I knew you were disabled, but I'd never actually thought about it before.

It must be hard. I'd miss a lot if it happened to me & I don't dance or play music. Computers are my thing, and I could always type one handed.

Re: Airport Screening/Screaming
You can type 1 handed ~ I have to & it's surprising how quickly it can be done :). It can be a pain though ~ control alt delete with 1 hand is hard! You learn to compensate & learn new skills from scratch. Sewing is hard & anything that requires fine manipulation with 2 hands or gross motor skills like carrying feed bags & heavy boxes. Walking 4 dogs was interesting! but 2-in-hand is ok.
I can't run & often walk with a limp, but I can (& do) walk miles. Before I stopped going to classes because I was moving house, I'd walk the 7/8 miles to college each Monday. The major thing is to watch my back ~ everything is done on 1 side, so my back is strained & I have arthritis in my spine. The ordinary nagging pain is ok, but if it shifts or changes I must take care as I cannot afford 5 months crawling round the floor, especially as now I have so many animals & no help (the last 2 major flare-ups happened when my childer's father was around & we had no animals ~ not that he was any help!)

That's funny.
