Come on now. Some comment about the film - I've seen suggestions that it did not live up to all the hype.

:-) I didn't notice any hype, so that wasn't an issue for me. I just looked at the list of films available yesterday and googled some for reviews. Though I did notice a couple of things saying Princess Diana was a direct descendant of the Duchess, which I'm not sure about.

After all the superhero films I've been seeing recently, it was refreshing to have an antagonist who isn't a bad guy. He wasn't out to make her miserable; it was a consequence of duty, honour, society, law. I blame the patriarchy :-)

Speaking of patriarchy, regarding the Bechdel test, which I've been thinking about quite a bit recently, it passes. There were a couple of conversations between women that weren't about a man. As far as I remember, they were all about "womanly subjects", eg childbearing. She talked about politics with men, but not with other women.

Lots of variety in dresses. I paid more attention to them than I normally would, after a comment early in the film.

Anyway, I'd recommend it.

Is the film any good? I'm off work and looking for an excuse not to go to the gym.

Yep, definitely more enjoyable than the gym :-)

You weren't wrong!

I've been reading more about them since. Do you know that when he finally married Bess, he got another mistress!?
lazy_hoorlazy_hoor on September 16th, 2008 09:43 am (UTC)
No! How old was he?!

I was going to read up on her today. I think Madonna, Celine Dion and Humphrey Bogart are descended from her, did you know that?

I hadn't thought about his age! I think Georgiana was 48 when she died, and himself and Bess married three years later, and he was older to begin with, so 50s or 60s?

Didn't know about those three. I've heard Fergie and Diana, but I've also heard that Diana is descended from Georgiana's brother, which makes more sense, surname-wise - Georgiana's children wouldn't be Spencers. But there could have been further intermarriage, giving her Spencer descendants. Wikipedia is unclear.

I found some bitching about Bess Foster:

It says she manipulated the two of them.

And here's the Duchess's wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgiana_Cavendish,_Duchess_of_Devonshire

And Earl Grey tea. It was named after Georgiana's shag puppet!

I love Earl Grey tea!

Me too. Decaf Earl Grey was my hot drink of choice for ages, until I had to give up tea. :-(
