random Dark Knight thoughts
Spoilers, of course.

The Joker is fucking scary.

I wasn't expecting Two Face to be in it. From seeing Harvey in the trailer, I thought he was the Joker's alias. But we knew who he was as soon as we saw the two-headed coin.

I was spoiled for Rachel being stuffed in the fridge*, but it was still disappointing. Or maybe disappointing because I was spoiled. Sometimes I need these things pointed out to me.

It passes the Bechdel test**. There were three named female characters that I recall. Rachel Dawes (stuffed in a fridge), Barbara Gordon (victim) and Detective Ramirez. Detective Ramirez talked to Barbara Gordon on the phone about getting the family to "safety".

I think Ramirez is ok from from a feminist perspective. No changes would have been required to make her a male character. Though I reckon it would be her wife in hospital, not her mother. Oh yeah, the judge was another named female character, though I don't remember her name. Also would have worked as male.

Oh, and the Russian ballerina. Basically arm candy, but at least she had opinions. I can't remember if Rachel took part in that conversation on-screen.

Who was the Scary Black Man who threw the detonator out the window?

Loved Bruce Wayne's reaction when he saved the lawyer.

Other bits that provoked a smile: Harvey in the middle of insulting Bruce Wayne, when Bruce grabs him in a choke hold. "Let's not do that again" after falling down the side of the building.

Bit that made me laugh that shouldn't have: Seeing the other side of Two Face. They went too far with the disfigurement. I wasn't expecting gross, but it was just too unrealistic.

After reading this, especially some of the comments, I'm glad that Rachel Dawes made her decision.

I keep wanting to call it "Dark Knight Returns". I want to re-read that. Do I want to re-read it enough to buy a copy?

* When a female character dies to further a male hero's or villain's arc. Named for a character in a comic who was literally stuffed in a fridge to be found after being killed. A problem because it is all too common. It's happened in two of the last two films I've seen. Google women in refrigerators. In this case, Rachel was killed to turn Harvey bad - both in-story (the Joker's plan) and at a story-telling level (the writers' decision).

** Are there 1) at least two named female characters, who ii) have a conversation iii) about something other than a man?
