Way back around May, before she left for Berlin, glitzfrau challenged me to learn how to knit before she came back to Dublin. And I did! Including casting on and casting off, which I was never able to do as a child.
I didn't learn purl till she came back and taught me at my girly night in November. We did the bit of stocking stitch that night.
So, here's my crappy examples. If you click on the picture, you'll go to the its flickr page. Run the mouse over the picture there, and you can see notes.
The camera's out of battery, so I won't be uploading any individual photos tonight.

In case there is not enough excitement conveyed by this post, I have run it through the The English-to-12-Year-Old-AOLer Translator:

I'll comment here instead of on Flickr. GOod first attempts! My first attempts were so shameful, I wouldn't have dreamt of photographing them!

LOLed your AOL speak.

Thank you!
They're not the very first - they got unravelled to practise again. But the stocking stitch is my first (adult) purling, with glitzfrau's help - she did a few rows and corrected a dropped stitch.

Looks good! You can get tips and humor from my wife's page (http://www.k2p2.net). Just a little plug ;-)

She looks a fair bit more advanced than me! Perhaps I'll go back when I've a bit more practice.

I left a comment on Flickr re the knitting. Can't believe that translation stuff though! Who invented that sort of thing?
a very caring potato: puppet angelmollydot on January 10th, 2007 10:03 am (UTC)
Invented which, the translator or the aol-speak itself? I think excitable little people invented the aol-speak. There's been various translators around for a while, like the Swedish Chef (from the muppets) one:

I lefft a cumment oon Fleeckr re-a zee kneetting. Cun't beleeefe-a thet trunsleshun stooffff thuoogh! Vhu infented thet surt ooff theeng? Bork Bork Bork!

Y'know me and Leedy (she's on your list isn't she? She's a friend of Glitz) have a knitting club? Alternate Sundays, usually at the Central Hotel's Library Bar. There's one this week if you want to come!
a very caring potatomollydot on January 10th, 2007 10:27 am (UTC)
Ah! I was fairly sure someone on my list went to one, but I couldn't remember who. I can't go this week, but maybe another one. What time? And is crochet allowed? I haven't done a crochet picture & post yet, but I've taken that up too.

JOOOOIN UUUUUUUS!

And I'm well impressed by your initial forays, and very amused by the fact that one of them is a sort of Cthulhu.

I'm going to have to look at the photos another time, unless you point them out to me.

Sewing things together is one of the thing putting me off trying things like jumpers. I've always hated sewing. Yet I kinda want to do patchwork. I don't make sense.

I haven't tried stripes yet either, but I'm sure I will soon.

Wonderful! I had to relearn to knit after the "accident" & it surprises people when they realize that you CAN knit with only 1 usable hand. A friend explained about the Yorkshire Mill Girls & their needle holders to prove I COULD do it when I was feeling very vulnerable & useless. Another friend told everyone I could crochet, so I had to learn that too! I have so many projects on the go at the moment ~ ruanas for myself & Annon in standard crochet, a huge blanket in standard, another in broomstick, a cardi/coat (AKA horse blanket) in Tunisian & a half-made full length hooded cloak... Somehow it takes you over! Then there's the knitting....
a very caring potato: what would macguyver do?mollydot on January 10th, 2007 11:28 pm (UTC)
Wow. I was going to ask how you do it with one hand, but now that I think about it, one hand is basically just holding it, so if you've a holder, you're set.
And the crochet? Do you have something holding the piece?

More questions... what's a ruana? What's broomstick crochet? Is Tunisian the one that's like a mixture between crochet & knitting?

I think I prefer the crochet, but I'll give both more time.
