speed dating
A friend wants to try speed dating. Anyone got any recommendations or even know somewhere in Dublin you can do it? Anyone tried it?

I went to one run by this lot: http://www.speeddatingireland.com/dub_3.htm

Personally I didn't like it because to be honest it is simply too speedy :P It didn't help that a big group of us went and we were all seated together, so being at the end meant the guys had talked to my friends already. My advice, go in twos or threes max.

The guys were mostly really nice and normal, one or two sleazebags out of 12 I think. They seat by age so if you friend is in one age group but has a preference for younger/older people I'd recommend lying, I was sorry I wasn't at the younger table.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that, it is helpful.

Wierdly, I didn't get notification for your first comment, but did for the one after.

Okay, it was probably more like 20 having had a look at the site. Towards the end they were all a blur!

A few of my friends have gone to places in Dublin and said bad things about them. There must be good ones somewhere, but I haven't heard of them.

I'd quite like to go as well, so if you get info, chuck it my way, would you? I've always wanted to see what it's like :-)

Will do. So far I just have Lainey's info, above.

Speed Dating in Dublin
flickr.com/O6scura here - haven't got myself sorted livejournal-wise, yet.
I had a friend ask me to do this once. I agreed thinking it would at least be fun. Terrible idea. Really, really bad. There were hundreds of people at it. The noise in the room would deafen a jet-engine and if you can't hear each other you might as well be in Café en Seine.
Get your friend to take up Salsa dancing. You get the same stream of people to chat with but you don´t have the awkward lack-of-pretext-for-being-there. Warning: Your friend will need to persist long enough to advance beyond the absolute beginner walked-off-the-street stage. Try it once and then go for 10-week a course. I know a girl who teaches beginners and can put you in touch...

Thanks for that. I've a friend who does salsa regularly, and I have to agree it's a good way of meeting people - he uses it to meet locals when he goes abroad.
I said it to her and she says she can do salsa already. So I suppose she just needs to get out there and go to salsa nights.
I might be interested in a teacher for myself though. We did a few classes a few months ago, but they didn't continue.

Where did you do the classes?
There are a few venues in Dublin; Ormond Quay, The Garda Club and Break for the Border spring to mind.
It sort of depends on which day you can keep free on a regular basis. My friend teaches at the Ormond Quay and I prefer the Garda Club.

In ParkWest. Someone who was interested organised them, but there was only one set of classes. They may start up again, but I wouldn't depend on it.

Ormand Quay would probably be handier. The Garda club would have been when we lived near there, but not so much now.

I need a salsa or dance icon.
